CHAPTER NINETEEN

The next morning, when I wake, I look down at the girls with a smile.

I move quietly, trying not to wake them. Ever since Tallen bit me, I sleep much less than those two. I now average only about three hours of sleep. When I’d told Tallen I loved that part of the Full Transformation, he’d simply glared at me and said that wasn’t something Vampires can do, even with a Full Transformation for full-blown royals. This was something else, and he mumbled something about fucking blind luck.

When I asked him how many hours of sleep he needed each night, he said at least six to be functional. Damn. I love Magic!

Though, in talking to Targun, he’d admitted that being a powerful Magus didn’t mean he can sleep less. He still enjoys his nine hours of sleep. Becoming a Magus isn’t supposed to give you additional stamina out of nowhere that allows you to stay awake. It seems I’m some oddball exception.

Whatever. I’ll take it.

Out in the kitchen, I look outside the window at the sky that is still an hour or so away from first light. I make a cup of coffee, and suddenly in my head, I feel a call coming through my communication stone.

“Hello?” I think, picking the call up without going back to the room for my stone.

One advantage of not using a cell phone, is that I can answer my communication stone from a short distance away—I’m connected to it telepathically. Still, I have no idea how the fuck Mike got it to work with a cell phone. Must be something about energy waves he can tap into, with that spectrophotometer I saw in his lab.

“Hey, Kevin. Hope I didn’t wake you up,” Tallen’s voice comes through.

“No. I woke up about fifteen minutes ago. Everything all right?” I ask him, concerned.

“No. Listen. I’m calling because I have a business proposition for you—if you’re interested.”

I can’t help but smile, even though he can’t see my face. “Let me guess,” I tell him, “You want in that ten percent I get from Mike and Jim’s inventions?”

I can almost see his sour expression as he says, “Yes. Targun and Mike’s parents are hard cases to crack. So, I wanted to run something by you. I know that this will be big. Hell, I can already imagine so many uses for that cell phone stone connection thing of Mike’s. This is huge.” I hear the excitement and frustration in his voice.

“And I don’t want to be left behind,” he continues, “but also, I figured you’ll need my contacts in the Magical world. Technically, you’re still a human—and you know how the Magical folk will take that.”

Yeah,” I tell him, wearing my own sour expression now. “I know that will be a possible roadblock.”

“Then, listen. All I’m asking for, is two percent of your ten and I swear I’ll make it worth your while.”

“Okay,” I tell him, now really curious. “What’s on the table?”

“You’re two percent for one billion dollars, American dollars.
