CHAPTER NINETEEN
The next morning, when I wake, I look down at the girls with a smile.
I move quietly, trying not to wake them. Ever since Tallen bit me, I sleep much less than those two. I now average only about three hours of sleep. When Iâd told Tallen I loved that part of the Full Transformation, heâd simply glared at me and said that wasnât something Vampires can do, even with a Full Transformation for full-blown royals. This was something else, and he mumbled something about fucking blind luck.
When I asked him how many hours of sleep he needed each night, he said at least six to be functional. Damn. I love Magic!
Though, in talking to Targun, heâd admitted that being a powerful Magus didnât mean he can sleep less. He still enjoys his nine hours of sleep. Becoming a Magus isnât supposed to give you additional stamina out of nowhere that allows you to stay awake. It seems Iâm some oddball exception.
Whatever. Iâll take it.
Out in the kitchen, I look outside the window at the sky that is still an hour or so away from first light. I make a cup of coffee, and suddenly in my head, I feel a call coming through my communication stone.
âHello?â I think, picking the call up without going back to the room for my stone.
One advantage of not using a cell phone, is that I can answer my communication stone from a short distance awayâIâm connected to it telepathically. Still, I have no idea how the fuck Mike got it to work with a cell phone. Must be something about energy waves he can tap into, with that spectrophotometer I saw in his lab.
âHey, Kevin. Hope I didnât wake you up,â Tallenâs voice comes through.
âNo. I woke up about fifteen minutes ago. Everything all right?â I ask him, concerned.
âNo. Listen. Iâm calling because I have a business proposition for youâif youâre interested.â
I canât help but smile, even though he canât see my face. âLet me guess,â I tell him, âYou want in that ten percent I get from Mike and Jimâs inventions?â
I can almost see his sour expression as he says, âYes. Targun and Mikeâs parents are hard cases to crack. So, I wanted to run something by you. I know that this will be big. Hell, I can already imagine so many uses for that cell phone stone connection thing of Mikeâs. This is huge.â I hear the excitement and frustration in his voice.
âAnd I donât want to be left behind,â he continues, âbut also, I figured youâll need my contacts in the Magical world. Technically, youâre still a humanâand you know how the Magical folk will take that.â
Yeah,â I tell him, wearing my own sour expression now. âI know that will be a possible roadblock.â
âThen, listen. All Iâm asking for, is two percent of your ten and I swear Iâll make it worth your while.â
âOkay,â I tell him, now really curious. âWhatâs on the table?â
âYouâre two percent for one billion dollars, American dollars.
